Cups and certificates were awarded to the top three pumpkin
growers in each age group, along with books to encourage the children
to take an interest in gardening and growing their own vegetables. The
event was a great success and everyone was looking forward to growing
even bigger pumpkins next year!

In order to ensure the future of the show for years to
come, we are keen to encourage local children to take an interest in
growing and exhibiting their own vegetables and this year we intend
to introduce categories specifically for children in the horticultural
section. We are also looking to maintain their interest throughout the
year and to that end we have come up with the idea of staging an annual
Giant Pumpkin competition at the end of October. Being such vigorous
growers, we hope that the pumpkins will capture the imagination of the
children and lead to a lifetime interest in gardening and producing
their own food.
We have a supply of pumpkin seeds that have been donated
by Marshalls, the seed and plant company, and the intention is to supply
each interested child with two seeds and a set of growing instructions.
